RF over Fiber Technology

RF over Fiber (RFoF) refers to a technology that makes it possible to transmit RF signals over optical fiber. For this, the analog signal is converted into an optical and transmitted over the fiber optic link. After that, it is converted back again in an optical receiver. As a result, significantly fewer loss is realized by transmit L-Band or CATV signals over large distances.

Typical Applications

For example ouur RF over Fiber products are used in the following applications:

  • Satellite Ground Stations and Teleports
  • Broadcasting Applications
  • IPTV Headends
  • Cable Network Headends
  • Military Satellite Communications

Advantages

Beyond traditional copper or coax, current “state-of-the-art” installations are best served by fiber-optic links. That is because RF over Fiber provides several advantages over coax:

  • limited loss
  • preserved signal quality
  • muted crosstalk

With our RFoF links you can implement transmission distances up to 200 km.

DEV’s RF over Fiber Products

With Optribution we offer a product line providing electrical and optical functions within one system. All our products are engineered, developed and manufactured in Germany.

Our products allow complex switching, redundant configurations, and long-distance signal transport up to 200 km. Furthermore, with the very compact, cost-effective Alpha line we serve up to 32 optical fiber links in just one Rack Unit.

All our RFoF products feature modular flexibility and scalability for future needs. In addition, our consistent architecture provides perfect compatibility with other DEV devices, including:

  • Matrix switches
  • Redundancy or antenna control systems
  • Lightning protection gear

Moreover, when using standardized frequencies, protocols and connectors, our RF over Fiber products can also be integrated with third-party systems. DEV’s proven track record has
demonstrated the highest signal performance quality and reliability.

Supported Frequencies and Functions

DEV Optribution Products are capable to transmit L-Band, CATV, UHF/VHF, as well as GPS / 10 MHz reference signals over optical fiber. With the modular architecutre, Optribution provides the following functions:

  • Signal Transmission
  • Optical Switching
  • Optical Splitting
  • CWDM / DWDM
  • Redundancy Routing
  • And much more…

On top of that all functional modules can be installed in different housings for indoor or outdoor usage.
